Eligibility
To be eligible to sit the test, individuals must be one of the following:
- an enrolled ITE student, defined as ‘a person who is enrolled in an accredited ITE course, either undergraduate or postgraduate’
- a prospective or unenrolled test candidate, defined as ‘a person who is not currently enrolled in an accredited ITE course.’
Students in a pathway program are categorised as prospective/unenrolled ITE students. For enrolled students, please note that some states and territories may require successful test results prior to commencement of your final practicum. From 2024, students who are required to sit the test will need to have a test attempt (but do not have to meet the test standard) in their first year of an accredited ITE course. You should contact your higher education provider and the teacher regulation authority in your state or territory to confirm their requirements and also seek advice from your higher education provider about the most suitable time to sit the test during your course.
The Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership website provides further information on the accreditation standards and procedures and links to the state and territory teacher registration authorities.
If you have previously sat the test as an enrolled student in an accredited ITE course (and have since unenrolled) or are in an Australian education pathway course that articulates directly into an accredited Australian ITE course which is identified in the ACER’s test registration system and are unsure whether you are eligible to sit as a prospective or unenrolled test candidate, please email teacheredtest@acer.org.
Candidates can visit the Australian Government Department of Education website for frequently asked questions about the test for more information.
Four test windows will be offered in 2025. Please check the Register - Test dates page for information.
Following the National Teacher Workforce Action Plan (Action Plan) - LANTITE trial, Education Ministers agreed from 2025 there will be no test limits for candidates sitting the LANTITE. The trial showed removing test limits and providing better feedback led to more candidates sitting the test and meeting the standard, and the changes were received positively from candidates and higher education providers.
This change will allow all candidates to continue to improve their personal literacy and numeracy skills to ensure they can meet the required standard. Higher education providers continue to play a key role in supporting their students to meet the standard.
